Description

The building at 59-67 Old Street, Ludlow, comprises a row of houses, now incorporating a shop and office. The structure has a core dating back to the 17th century, with later additions and alterations in the 18th century and early 19th century. The front is rendered with stucco, likely from the early 19th century, and features a Welsh slate roof. Stacks are located centrally to the left, at the front, and at the right end, with rendered surfaces and moulded stone hoods. A further brick chimney rises from the rear. The building follows a 4-unit plan and stands three storeys high, with cellars beneath. It has a 6-window front with 6/6 sash windows on the ground and second floors, and smaller 3/3 sashes above. Moulded wooden eaves run along the top. A pair of matching entrances are positioned to the left centre, each featuring part-glazed panelled doors with overlights, recessed within panelled surrounds and sheltered by moulded hoods on pilasters. To the right are two 6/6 and one 8/8 sash windows; the far-right entrance has a studded oak plank door with moulded strips, leading to a passage to the rear, which also provides access to number 67, and is protected by a moulded hood supported by consoles. This passage has stone flags on the floor, an exposed ceiling beam, and a rounded pilaster with run-out stops. The left-hand rear corner is splayed with a part-arch. To the left of the front entrance are two 6/6 sashes and a probably reused 19th-century 4-panel door within a beaded case, with a moulded hood on consoles. This entrance leads to a passage with stuccoed walls (a doorway is located to the left) and exposed ceiling beams. The right gable is rendered. The rear of the building includes what is probably an 18th-century addition to numbers 63-67, with a plain tiled roof and 18th-century sash windows in numbers 65 and 67. A further gabled extension is present on number 63. An early 19th-century extension is attached to number 61. A cellar hatch marked "Ludlow Foundry" is located on number 67. Inside, on the ground floor to the right of number 67 there are chamfered ceiling beams with a 17th-century moulded plaster ceiling.
