Description

Number 1 Silver Street, including Number 31 Bridge Street, is a building that has been converted into offices, commercial premises, and four flats. It dates from the mid to late 18th century and is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a Welsh slate roof. The building has three storeys and five bays, featuring a double-depth plan with a wing at the rear right, which is part of Number 31 Bridge Street.

The exterior includes a cement-rendered plinth and rusticated quoins. There are stone steps leading up to a columned wooden porch that shelters a central six-panelled door with an overlight. The flanking bays have nosed stone sills beneath 20th-century casements, which are set under painted flat arches with projecting keystones. On the first floor, there are plain sashes in surrounds similar to those on the ground floor, while the second floor features shorter sashes. The building has an eaves cornice and ashlar gable copings, with brick end stacks located at the rear of the ridge in the valley.

On the right side of the building, there is a corniced 19th-century doorcase leading to Number 31 Bridge Street, flanked by shallow canted-bay windows, with windows above styled similarly to those on the front, though some have been altered. The gables are connected by a flat-topped parapet.

Inside, the entrance hall features a chequered marble floor and a round-arched doorway that leads to a staircase with turned balusters and a fielded panel dado that rises three storeys.
