Description

This building, located at 62 Bampton Street in Tiverton, dates back to the 1830s and is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond style. It features a natural slate roof and cast-iron rainwater goods. The house occupies a corner site, with the Bampton Street side currently housing a dentist's surgery and the Newport Street side occupied by a solicitor's office.

The front elevations on both streets are designed to be identical, although the internal layouts differ. The Bampton Street side is one room wide and double-depth, while the Newport Street side is two rooms wide and one room deep, with a central staircase leading to the flat above the dentist's office.

Both elevations are two storeys high, featuring three bays, a basement, and an attic. Each has a central doorway with a round-headed arch and Gibbs surround, along with incised reveals. The front doors have two vertical panels, with an overlight on Newport Street and a fanlight on Bampton Street. There are five 12-pane hornless sash windows on each elevation, and a two-light casement dormer window on the Newport Street side. The windows are topped with flat arches. The Bampton Street elevation has part of its roof covered with asbestos slates, and the basement pavement lights are sealed over.

The interior has been partially inspected. The Bampton Street side has lost its original staircase, while the Newport Street side retains its original stick balusters and turned newel posts in a dogleg stair. Some original four-panel doors are still present.
