Description
No. 8 Newport Street is a house built around the 1850s. It features mass wall construction that is stuccoed and blocked out, with a right return in red brick and a left return that is slate-hung. The right end has a brick stack with a platband, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.
The ground floor has been rearranged to accommodate a shop extension with No. 8. Inside, a staircase located behind the entrance on the left leads to the first floor, where double-depth rooms are heated by the end stack on the right. The left return may show signs of a previously adjoining property that is no longer standing.
The exterior consists of three storeys plus a basement and attic, with a two-window front. It has a pilastered doorcase topped with a cornice supported by enriched consoles, and the doorcase features panelled reveals. Above the four-panel door is a geometric overlight. To the right, there is a two-pane hornless sash window, while the left bay has 12-pane hornless sashes and the right bay has 16-pane hornless sashes. The first-floor windows have stepped voussoirs and flat arches, and the second-floor windows feature keyblocks. There is a cast-iron grille at the basement half light.
The left return has two 12-pane hornless sashes on the second floor and one 3 over 6-pane hornless sash in the gable. The interior has not been inspected but may retain features of interest.
