Description

No. 22 Church Hill is a house dating from the 1840s. The front is stuccoed and rendered, with the left-hand side slate-hung. It has a slate roof with deep, overhanging eaves and a hipped end to the front. A brick axial chimney stack is located on the right, and is shared with the adjacent property at No. 20 Church Hill. The ground slopes steeply to the right, with a basement on that side. The house has a double-depth plan, with an entrance on the left and a staircase at the rear of the passage. It is two storeys high with a basement. The front is arranged with a regular two-window pattern. The basement on the right has three glazed slit openings. The ground floor has an entrance on the left with a 19th-century six-panel door, a decorative fanlight, and a complete 19th-century doorcase featuring pilasters and an entablature. There are 19th-century twelve-pane hornless sash windows to the right and on the first floor with visible, moulded sash boxes. The left-hand side wall features large slate flags lining the lower part of the ground floor outer wall. Inside, the 19th-century staircase has a ramped, wreathed rail and stick balusters. Only the entrance hall was inspected. No. 22 Church Hill remains largely unaltered, retaining its original 19th-century windows.
