Description

A pair of houses located in Tiverton, dating from the 1820s. They are constructed of Flemish bond brick with natural slate roofs and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The houses are double-depth, one room wide, with end stacks and an external door providing heating. Number 53 has an additional passageway entrance on the left, which now serves as the entrance to number 55. The front has two and a half bays, with an additional window inserted into the first floor of number 53. Number 53 features a six-panel front door with an integral overlight; the front door of number 51 has been replaced. Both houses have good doorcases with sunk-panelled pilasters, fielded panelled reveals, deep entablatures and cornices. Number 53 has three 12-pane hornless sash windows, and a four-pane horned sash window above the passageway for number 55. Number 51 has replacement plastic sash windows that respect the original window openings, plus a ‘bookscraper’ window to the left of the front door. The left return of number 53 is gable ended, with weatherboarding extending down to the roof level of its neighbour. The interior was not inspected but may contain features of interest.
