Description

Nos. 2 and 2A on Newport Street in Tiverton is a former public house that has been divided into flats. It dates from around the 1860s or earlier and features mass wall construction. The ground floor of the Newport Street elevation and the Castle Ward side has chamfered rustication that imitates ashlar blocks, while the first floor is stuccoed and blocked out. The building has a hipped slate roof and cast-iron rainwater goods. It occupies a corner site, with the main entrance on the Castle Ward elevation and new entrances to the flats located at the rear, accessible by a flight of steps.

The exterior includes deep eaves and a moulded cornice at the first-floor level, above a platband. The first-floor windows are framed with roll-moulded architraves. There is a central 6-panel door with fielded upper panels. To the left of the door, there is one first-floor and one ground-floor window, both glazed with 12-pane hornless sashes. The ground and first-floor windows to the right of the door are blind. The rear elevation likely features 20th-century sash windows and three gabled dormers from the 19th or early 20th century, each with 2-light casements.

The building has an attractive rounded corner with a large lamb carved above, which was presumably located above the entrance to the public house. The front facing Newport Street has three windows, all glazed with sashes; the ground-floor windows do not have horns. The outer windows are 16-pane sashes, while the center windows are 12-pane sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
