Description

No. 35 Ford Street is a house in a row that was originally part of a larger house, likely dating from the 17th century or earlier, and remodeled and enlarged around the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed of stuccoed stone, with the front wall featuring scantling timber framing on the ground floor and bricks on the first floor, all covered in stucco. It has a dry slate roof with gabled ends and crested ridge tiles. There is an old dressed granite chimneystack on the right-hand gable end with a weathered cap. The original layout is uncertain, but it may represent the higher end of a three-room plan, with No. 31 to the left serving as the hall and part of the lower end. The front wall has been rebuilt about 1 meter forward, and the eaves were raised in the mid to late 19th century. The current internal layout consists of a small front room and a larger rear room, with an entrance passage to the left. The house is two storeys high and has a regular two-window range, featuring 4-pane sashes in moulded flush casings, with square hoodmoulds on the first floor. The doorway to the left has a late 19th or early 20th century half-glazed door and a small rectangular overlight. Inside, there are two longitudinal chamfered ceiling beams without stops, and the fireplace from the old right-hand stack has been blocked. In addition to its early fabric, the 19th-century front of this building enhances the street scene.
