Description
2 and 3 College Yard are a pair of houses, now used as offices, dating from the late 18th century. They are constructed of pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring flat arches made of gauged red brick, stone sills, and stone doorcases. The buildings have a plain tile roof and two tall party-wall stacks with cornices and pots, along with a cast-iron grill.
The structure is three storeys high with a half-basement and has a symmetrical arrangement of windows: two on the ground floor, one in the middle, and two on the first floor, with the second floor having three windows. The ground and first floors have 6/6 sash windows, while the second floor has 3/3 sashes. The central windows are blind, and all windows are set in plain reveals with sills and flat arches. The half-basement has an opening with a cambered arch and grill.
There are three renewed steps leading to the outer entrances. The left entrance features a 6-panel door, with the upper four panels now glazed and the lower panel flush beaded. The right entrance has a 5-panel door, where the upper three panels are raised and fielded, and the lower panels are flush beaded, all set in panelled reveals. The overlights above the doors have radial glazing bars. Both doorcases are similar, with plain pilasters that have an incised Greek fret and a cornice above. The buildings are topped with a crowning moulded cornice and blocking course.
Inside, the buildings retain original joinery, including panelled shutters, and a dogleg staircase on the left with stick balusters. Some rooms still have plasterwork. Historically, the buildings are shown on Young's Map of 1779 and are part of a notable group of structures that contribute to the setting of Worcester Cathedral.
