Description
No. 8 is a house that has been converted into offices, along with attached walls, gatepiers, and a gate. It was built between 1720 and 1750, and is clearly later than No. 7. The structure features later additions and alterations, with walls that incorporate earlier materials, likely from the 13th century, and renewed gates. The building is constructed of reddish-brown brick, with stucco on the front and the ground floor of the left side, while the upper part is painted. It has a hipped plain tile roof on the left side and a tall reddish-brown chimney stack with a renewed oversailing course. The wall is made of coursed red and green sandstone.
The house has three storeys above a half-basement and five first-floor windows. It includes a plinth, bands at the first and second floors, a moulded cornice, and a low coped parapet. The ground and first floors feature 6/6 sash windows, with thick glazing bars on the first floor, all set in shallow reveals. The second floor has renewed casement windows, and the attic includes three box dormers with casement windows. The basement has blocked openings, two of which have grilles. The central entrance is accessed by four roll-edged steps leading to a six-panel door with raised and fielded panels and a three-pane overlight, topped with a hood supported by corbels. The left side has a 6/6 sash window in plain reveals, while the rear features a 6/6 sash window and dentil eaves.
Inside, the building retains original plasterwork and joinery, including the original staircase.
The subsidiary features include a quadrant wall with chamfered copings that connects to the left return at the rear for about eight meters, leading to a pair of gate piers with stepped ovolo-moulded angles and a moulded cornice topped with urn finials. Between the piers are double plank gates, and there is a further quadrant wall that connects to the wall and railings of No. 10.
All the listed buildings in College Yard form a cohesive group and contribute to the setting of the Cathedral.
