Description

The South African War Memorial in Worcester is a war memorial unveiled in September 1908 by General Sir Neville Lyttleton, with the sculptor being Robert Colton ARA. The memorial features an ashlar plinth topped with bronze figures. The plinth has three steps leading to its base and is oblong in shape with chamfered angles. It is inscribed with the words: 'Their bodies are buried in peace;/ but their names liveth for evermore. Ecclus XLIV 14', followed by a moulded band and a central block that reads: 'IN GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF/ WORCESTER-/ SHIRE WHO IN/SOUTH AFRICA/ GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR/ THEIR/ COUNTRY./ AD1899-1902'. The memorial is crowned with a cornice and features a soldier holding a rifle in a 'ready' position, with a winged figure of Victory behind, holding a laurel wreath. This exceptional sculpture is also an important feature of the streetscape, contributing to the setting of Worcester Cathedral.
