Description

No. 51 Skeldergate is a house, now used as offices, dating from the late 18th century, with the left side rebuilt in the 20th century. It is constructed of pink mottled brick in Flemish bond, set on a brick plinth, featuring a timber doorcase and eaves cornice, painted stone dressings, and orange-red brick window arches. The roof is hipped and covered with pantiles, with two brick stacks—one near the front of the roof ridge and the other at the rear.

The building has a through-passage plan and stands two stories high with a two-window front. To the right, there is an open-pedimented doorcase with plain pilasters, a fluted impost band, and a dentil cornice supported by carved consoles. The entrance features a recessed six-panel door approached by three steps and topped with a radial fanlight in a plain reveal. The ground and first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes with painted stone sills on the ground floor and a sill band on the first floor. The second floor has squat 9-pane sashes, all with flat arches made of gauged brick. A raised band runs along the first floor, and there is a dentilled eaves band below a moulded modillion cornice that returns at the right end. The rear of the building has 12-pane sashes on the ground and first floors and squat 9-pane sashes on the second floor.

Inside, there is a staircase featuring slender turned balusters and a swept handrail.
