Description
No. 55 Skeldergate is a house that has been converted into part of a hotel. It dates from the 18th century and was partly rebuilt after suffering war damage in 1942. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with the upper storey rendered and a hipped, tiled roof.
The exterior features two storeys and an attic, with a five-window front. On the left side, there are panelled double doors topped by a radial-glazed overlight. The windows are 12-pane sashes with painted stone sills, and the ground floor windows have keyed wedge lintels. A three-course raised band runs along the first floor, and a parapet with flat coping conceals flat dormers in the attic.
Inside, there is a closed-string staircase featuring column-on-vase balusters, a moulded ramped-up handrail, and turned newels.
