Description
No. 52 Skeldergate is a sawmill and timber warehouse, now serving as a gymnasium. It was built in 1839 and later altered for John Henry Cattley. The building features pink mottled brick in Flemish bond, with ashlar dressings and a hipped roof made of Welsh slate, supported by wrought-iron corner brackets.
The exterior has a three-storey, five-bay front, with the end bays slightly projecting. The ground floor originally had an arcade of five round arches, which was formerly open; the end arches are now closed with panelled double doors, while the central arches are blocked by brick walling and feature 20th-century radial-glazed windows. There is a former lifting door in the centre of the first floor, situated between segment-arched windows, with semicircular blind recesses containing similar windows in the outer bays. On the second floor, there is another former lifting door in the centre, flanked by circular openings, and flat arched windows in the outer bays. The ground floor has an arcade impost band, a painted ashlar band on the first floor, and moulded ashlar sills for the openings in the outer bays of the first and second floors.
Inside, the ground floor is supported by two massive cylindrical brick piers. The roof is constructed with seven king-post trusses made of heavy scantling, featuring raking struts and a ridge beam.
