Gunnery Gymnasium, Training Camp, Barry Buddon

The Gunnery Gymnasium at Barry Buddon is a single-storey, three-bay rectangular building dating from around 1860. Originally a timber training building, it was converted into a gymnasium in 2001. The exterior features painted timber tongue and groove weatherboarding and a painted brick plinth. There is a large square-headed entrance on the west elevation with sliding timber doors, accessed by rebuilt concrete steps. The east elevation has a pair of metal training gunports, each with two-leaf shutters, low flaps, long metal hinges, flanking hinges, stop blocks, and ventilators below.

The windows are timber sash and case with small pane glazing and horns. The roof has been replaced with corrugated asbestos, and the cast-iron rainwater goods feature anchor motifs on the hoppers.

Inside, the building now serves as a gymnasium and retains its timber king-post roof structure, which has been reinforced with later steel girders. The original varnished timber boarded floor is still in place. The gunports are set in splayed openings, with cupboards on either side for storing ancillary materials. There are holes in the ceiling from removed smoke hoods, and a trapdoor in the southeast corner leads to a cellar in the brick plinth.
