Description
Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, located on High Street in Monifieth, Dundee, was designed by J Donald Mills and Godfrey D B Shepherd in 1909. This 8-bay, rectangular church is constructed of brick, featuring applied half-timber cladding and wet dash, topped with a red tile roof and deep eaves. The chancel is smaller and does not have timbering.
On the south elevation, there is an open porch with a bell-cast roof at the west, leading to a doorway with an angled head and two-leaf half-glazed doors. This elevation also has four 3-light timber trefoil windows with rectangular leaded glazing, along with a smaller 2-light window in the chancel, all separated by rectangular piers. The north elevation is similar but includes vestries at both the east and west ends.
The west elevation features a 3-light window flanked by two giant piers that support a slightly jettied gablehead. The east elevation has three stepped lancets.
Inside, the narthex and nave are adorned with a king post and collar roof, vertical sarking, and a mansard ceiling with horizontal lining in the chancel. Notable interior features include a pulpit, a perpendicular screen, and a reredos sourced from Lord Roberts' Workshops in Dundee. The east windows contain coloured glass, and there is an organ with decorated pipes located in the gallery at the west, which is enclosed by a trefoil balustrade.
The church is surrounded by a coursed rubble enclosing wall, with brick piers topped with stone caps and wrought-iron gates featuring a thistle motif.
