Description
The Old Parish Church, located on Church Street in Stranraer, was built between 1838 and 1841. It features a three-bay front and has a rectangular plan in the Perpendicular style. The entrance elevation is constructed from sandstone, while the sides are made of whinstone, with sandstone dressings. The church has a base course, buttresses that divide the bays, and flanking octagonal corner buttresses topped with pinnacles. There is an octagonal shaft at the gablehead, although the pinnacled finial is missing. The central gabled bay is flanked by octagonal pinnacles on the buttresses. The rear elevation and the south, west, and north window openings have tooled quoins.
The east elevation, which serves as the entrance, has steps that are flanked by railings and lamp standards leading to a pointed-arch roll-moulded central entrance with a two-leaf timber door. An oval disc with a cross is inset above the door, and there is a pointed-arch traceried window above it, along with windows in the flanking bays.
On the west elevation, there are four centre-arched doorpieces on the outer left and right, each with two-leaf timber doors. A small brick lean-to is located at the centre ground, with a pair of pointed-arched lights above and a small arched opening at the centre.
The north elevation features four arched lights, along with a brick lean-to and stack at the centre.
The church has a grey slate roof with stone skews and a narrow coped brick wallhead stack on the north elevation.
Inside, the church has a flat plaster ceiling with painted ribs and decorative bosses, along with simple plasterwork in three panels. There is a U-shaped gallery supported by cast iron columns with bell-capitals and a panelled gallery front, as well as timber dado panelling. A modern timber pulpit was added by Mackenzie and Partners Ltd in 1957, along with a modern organ by William Hill and Sons and Norman and Beard, also from 1957. Flanking stained glass windows were created by Alexander Kerr in 1957-58, and there is additional stained glass by John Blyth in the north elevation.
The church is also adorned with late Victorian cast-iron lamp standards featuring foliaged cresting.
