Description

The George Hotel, located at 49 George Street, Stranraer, was built in 1876. It incorporates an earlier Georgian building into its design. The hotel is a two-storey and attic structure with a central courtyard, forming an "L" shape. Its asymmetrical plan is nine bays wide, and the exterior is rendered in painted finish. A base course runs along the ground level, and the first floor features corniced architraved windows sitting on corbels. The attic is highlighted by pedimented dormers. Iron hanging baskets are positioned between the ground and first floors, and a dentilled cornice runs along the building's top.

The north elevation, which serves as the primary entrance, is symmetrical. Steps lead up to a prominent, pedimented doorpiece featuring a decorative dentilled cornice. Urns originally topped octagonal shafts (one is now missing) which flank the pediment, and the words “?George Hotel?” are inscribed within the pediment. A timber and glass door provides access, with a single window above it. A thistle motif is aligned above the window. A dormer is surmounted by a lead-platformed pyramid tower. Regular window placement defines the flanking bays, and a postbox is fixed to the ground floor on the outer left. Decorative rose and shamrock motifs adorn the first floor windows in the penultimate bays on either side. Decorative timber surrounds the ground floor windows.

The west (Church Street) elevation is eight bays wide. A dentilled dividing band course runs along the elevation, terminating in skewputts over the first three bays on the left. First-floor windows are pedimented and corbelled, with a dentilled cornice and an anthemion and palmette frieze. The window to the outer left and the central upper window in the three bays on the left are surrounded by plain frames. Scrolled decorative consoles support the ground floor windows that flank the door to the right. A single window is set into a gabled bay on the outer left. Arched windows, set within keystoned, rollmoulded surrounds, are present within the three bays on the left, with the central bay being blind. A boarded, timber carriage entrance has a studded surround and a timber entrance door to the right, with two small glass panels on the left and flanking windows. The upper storeys feature regular fenestration.

The majority of the windows are timber sash and case windows with two panes of glass. The roof is covered in grey slate, and features skews, square skewputts, dentilled corniced stacks, and circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

Inside, the hotel showcases plaster ceilings, decorative friezes, and egg and dart ovolo mouldings. An elaborate staircase has turned wall strings and domed newel posts. Corbel supports in the central courtyard reveal remnants of the earlier building's structure.

A wall-mounted postbox, manufactured from 1858, is also part of the building.
