Description

The Old Town Hall, located on George Street in Stranraer, was built in 1777 and features a two-storey, three-bay design with a two-storey rear extension added between 1854 and 1855. The building has a symmetrical and rectangular plan, finished with painted render, a base course, a dividing band course, and projecting cills. The fascia displays the words 'Stranraer Museum'.

On the north elevation, the central bay is advanced and features a pedimented doorpiece with a two-leaf timber door and a fanlight. The roofline breaks to create a balustraded parapet, topped by a square tower that frames a clock face and plaque on the first stage. Above this is an octagonal belfry with a spire topped by a weathercock finial. The ground floor has two modern windows to the left and a single modern window to the right, along with a glass and timber door that has a letterbox fanlight. On the first floor, single windows flank the central bay.

The east elevation, facing Church Street, has two blocked windows on the ground floor and two single windows on the first floor in the original 1777 section to the outer right. The 1854-5 addition features a four-bay blind arcaded ground floor, with a two-leaf timber door located in the penultimate bay to the right. The first floor has a three-bay pedimented centerpiece that contains a plaque.

On the south elevation, there are two windows on the ground floor to the right, three infilled openings to the left, and three round-arched windows on the first floor. Steps lead to a metal door located between the ground and first floors to the outer left.

The building showcases a variety of glazing patterns, primarily timber sash and case windows, with modern picture glazing on the ground floor of the north elevation. The first floor features 12-pane timber sash and case glazing, while the south and east elevations have small pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate and has stone skews.

Inside, the modern museum fixtures obscure any period detailing that may have existed.
