Description

Dunbae House, located on Church Street in Stranraer, is a classical rectangular-plan house built in 1823. It stands three stories tall and features three bays, with a central circular stair tower at the rear topped with a finial. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble, with painted render on the east elevation and painted ashlar surrounds. It has a base course, painted margins, a dentilled cornice, and a blocking course, along with cill brackets.

The entrance elevation has steps leading to a central doorpiece that is pedimented and pilastered, featuring a four-panel timber door. Above this, there is a pedimented single window aligned with the first floor, while the second floor has a tripartite window with a semi-circular pediment over the central light. The gablehead has a curvilinear chimney, and there is an oculus within. The ground floor has single windows in the flanking bays, with tripartite windows on the first floor and single windows on the second floor.

On the rear elevation, the central stair tower is flanked by single windows on the second floor, with a small window to the right of the stair tower. There are modern gabled and flat-roofed extensions at the ground level. The windows throughout include plate glass timber sash and case styles, with multi-pane glazing in the stair tower and modern windows on the second floor at the rear, as well as rooflights. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring skews, corniced gablehead stacks, and circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, along with a lamp over the entrance doorway.

The property is enclosed by boundary walls, which include a coped boundary wall and iron railings, along with coped gatepiers. There is a rubble wall with coped harl gatepiers at the vehicular entrances on the west side. The interior was not seen in 1997.
