Description

Ayr Grammar Primary School is a school building rebuilt in 1909, situated on Midton Road, Ayr. It is a substantial building of single, two and three storeys with an attic, presenting a nine-bay principal elevation. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with rusticated detailing in parts, and incorporates stugged squared sandstone. A corniced blocking course and square-headed window openings are characteristic features, with some key-stone detailing.

The west (entrance) elevation has sixteen bays arranged as 2-3-4-7. It displays regular fenestration to the two bays on the outer left. A hoodmould, keystone, and raised apron feature on the first-floor window of the return bay. The advanced three-bay section to the left has bipartite windows on the lower floors and a single window above. A single window is present at the gablehead. A pilastered doorpiece incorporates a semi-circular hoodmould, glazed timber doors, a bipartite window above, and four single windows at ground floor to the right. Seven single windows are found in the single-storey section to the outer right.

The north (principal) elevation is nine bays wide. It features a base course, rusticated stonework at ground floor level, and a first-floor cill course. Pilasters divide the gabled section bays. Gabled advanced bays, two bays to the left and three bays to the right, are present with regular fenestration on both floors. A clock is positioned within the gable to the left, and a porthole window is visible in the right gable. The central bay also has regular fenestration on both floors, with a balustrade linking the two gables.

The east (side) elevation is grouped into eight, three, and three bays. The single-storey section on the outer left has eight single windows. The advanced three-bay section to the right has bipartite windows on the lower floors, single windows on the upper floors, and a single window to the gablehead. The three-bay section to the right has regular fenestration, with a hoodmould, keystone, and raised apron above the first-floor window in the return bay. A modern addition projects at the outer left.

The south elevation was not visible during inspection in 1999.

The majority of windows are timber sash and case windows with 18 panes. The roof is covered with grey slate, and features coped gableheads and wallhead stacks with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present. The interior of the gymnasium features timber dado panelling and iron roof beams.

A single-storey, three-bay, asymmetrical caretaker’s cottage is constructed of squared and snecked sandstone with polished long and short margins. It has a two-leaf timber door with a letterbox fanlight in the centre bay of the principal elevation, flanked by a bipartite window to the right and a single window to the left. The roof is a pyramidal grey slate, and a corniced sandstone stack sits at the apex. Cast-iron rainwater goods match the main building. The interior of the cottage was not visible.

Square-plan stone gatepiers are found on the north elevation, with additional iron gatepiers to the right. Iron gatepiers are also present on the west elevation. Iron gates provide access at the north, west, and east elevations. Railings top the boundary wall on the west elevation and a section of the north elevation, with a coped boundary wall enclosing the site.
