Description

Bellevue House, located at 3 Marchmont Road in Ayr, dates from around 1810 and was flatted by Edward Darley in 1958. This is a two-storey and attic, three-bay classical house with single-storey wings. The entrance elevation features squared ashlar stone, while the sides are constructed of rubble. The building has a base course, cill courses at both the ground and first floors, a central band course, a cornice, and a blocking course. The first-floor windows have reeded aprons.

On the west (entrance) elevation, there is an advanced central bay with a pediment. The entrance features a pilastered, corniced doorpiece with a two-leaf timber door and a letterbox fanlight above. There is a single corniced window aligned above the door in an arched recess at the first floor. The flanking bays have regular single window fenestration, with the bay to the right being canted. The attic has canted dormers on the outer right and left sides. The flanking wings have tripartite windows, although the wing to the right has been altered and features an urn finial on its pediment.

The north and south elevations are gabled and blank, with the ground floors obscured by the wings. The east elevation was not seen in 1999. The building has a combination of plate glass timber sash and case windows along with modern windows. The roof is slate, with stone skews, gablehead stacks, and both circular and polygonal chimney cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.

The interior was not seen in 1999. The property is also defined by iron gatepiers at the central pedestrian entrance and a coped boundary wall that encloses the site.
