Description

Belleville Lodge, located at 5 Blacket Avenue in Edinburgh, is a classical house built around 1835, with later additions from the 19th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure made of cream sandstone polished ashlar. The building features a base course, strip quoins, and panelled aprons beneath the ground floor windows. There is a dividing band course, an eaves course, and a dentilled cornice above the first-floor windows, along with carved circular motifs in the pediments above. The eaves are dentilled and overhanging.

On the south elevation, there are steps leading to a central doorway with a basket arch. The doorway has a two-leaf, panelled outer door and a corbelled cornice above it. A deeply recessed single window with an architrave is located above the doorway on the first floor. Flanking the central entrance are full-height, three-light canted windows in pedimented bays.

The east elevation facing Blacket Avenue is also three-bay, featuring a modern single-storey extension on the outer right. There is a blind window above this extension on the first floor, while the remaining bays have regular fenestration. A segmental arched dormer is positioned above.

The windows are predominantly timber, sash and case, with some featuring 12 panes on the east side. The roof is pitched with grey slate and has coped ridge stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1996.

Surrounding the property are high, coped rubble boundary walls. The gatepiers are tall and square with pyramidal caps, and there is a pedestrian gate to the north. A wing wall with a pedestrian gate adjoins the house to the east, while a carriage gate to the west has been converted into a garage.
