42 Blacket Place, Edinburgh

40 Blacket Place is a mid-19th century, two-storey classical terrace comprising three houses, arranged in a symmetrical nine-bay rectangular plan. The building features polished sandstone ashlar with a channelled finish at the ground level, while the sides and rear are constructed from rubble. It has a base course, a dividing band course, a cornice, and a blocking course. Notably, No 40 has an additional storey. The first-floor windows have lugged architraves, while the attic storey windows have plain architraves.

The northeast elevation, which serves as the entrance, has advanced bays flanking No 40. The doorcases are adorned with entablatures supported by Greek Doric columns in front of single pilasters in both the central bay and the advanced bays. There are single windows on the first floor above and on both floors of all bays, along with three smaller windows in the attic storey. Single-storey corniced wings connect to the adjoining properties on either side and contain pedestrian doorways.

The windows are predominantly four-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a piended design, with corniced wallhead stacks. The attic storey has a flat roof with two pairs of corniced wallhead stacks. Small sections of iron railings lead up to each of the doorcases.

The interior was not seen in 1996. The property is also bordered by low coped boundary walls, which are mutual and face the street.
