Description
17 Blacket Place is a classical villa built in the earlier to mid-19th century. It is a single-storey, symmetrical building with a rectangular plan, featuring a basement and recessed wings. The exterior is made of polished sandstone ashlar, with a droved basement and rubble on the sides and rear. Notable architectural elements include a base course, an eaves course, and deeply overhanging eaves.
On the west (entrance) elevation, there are steps leading up to a pedimented doorcase supported by Doric columns, with pilasters behind. The entrance features a four-panel timber door topped with a three-pane fanlight. Flanking bays have single windows with architraves and aprons. The one-bay wings each have a single window. The basement has a central timber door with single windows on either side, a single window on the north wing (which connects with the wing of No 15), and a two-leaf wooden garage door on the south wing.
The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended shape with deep eaves. The building has coped wallhead stacks with corniced cans. The ground floor features 12-pane lying-pane sash and case windows, while the basement has both 12-pane and 9-pane sash and case windows.
The interior was not seen in 1996. The property is enclosed by a low coped boundary wall along the street, with gatepiers at either end, and has coped mutual rubble boundary walls.
