Description
21-21B Blacket Place is a classical villa built in the mid to later 19th century. It is a single-storey, symmetrical, three-bay structure with a square plan and a basement. The villa features polished sandstone ashlar on the front, with stugged rubble on the sides and rear. Notable architectural elements include a base course, an eaves course, a modillioned cornice, and a blocking course, along with architraved windows.
The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, has steps leading up to the entrance. It features an advanced doorpiece with a modillioned pediment that breaks the eaves, an architraved doorway, and a six-panel timber door topped with a plate glass fanlight. There are tripartite windows in the flanking bays, and a corniced gateway leads to the rear to the north. To the south, a gate leads down steps to a two-storey, single-bay wing at basement level, which has a timber panelled door to No 21B on the ground floor and a single window on the first floor above.
The main block has six-pane timber sash and case windows, flanked on either side by three-pane sash and case windows. The wing features a four-pane timber sash and case window. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design with a central cupola. The wallhead stacks are corniced and shouldered, with octagonal cans, and there is a coped stack at the rear also with octagonal cans.
The interior was not seen in 1996. The property is surrounded by low coped boundary walls along the street, with piers flanking the entrance, and there are coped mutual boundary walls with Nos 19 and 23.
