Description

The building is a disused gymnasium, constructed around 1902 by Colonel Sir Henry Pilkington RE. It features red brick with Portland stone dressings and a slate roof, and has a rectangular open plan.

The exterior is a single storey with a sixteen bay side range. The north entrance gable end includes large square clasping buttress towers leading to a coped gable with a central lateral stack. There is a plinth/cill band and an upper cill band. The corner towers have small round-arched windows at the base, while the upper stage features keyed lunettes with architraves beneath ashlar bands, a cornice, and a parapet with ashlar corners. The gable has outer doorways with keyed architraves and steep pediments leading to panelled doors, paired flat-headed inner windows, and a central lateral stack that extends through a large upper lunette, adorned with bands and outer mullions. A relief panel on the stack displays an anchor and rope. The south coped gable has a large lunette with four banded mullions and clasping buttresses. The sides are marked by plain buttresses between upper segmental-arched windows and an impost band, along with a lower west aisle range that features three entrances with bracketed canopies and raised parapets behind, capped with gabled end blocks.

The interior has not been inspected but is noted to contain a large gymnasium with a wooden floor.

Historically, this gymnasium, along with the adjoining swimming pool, reflects efforts to improve the physical standards of the late 19th-century navy. It is part of a significant group of naval barracks buildings that includes the Captains' House, mess block, barracks, and canteen.
