Description

The bridge located on the north side of Central Avenue in Gillingham was built around 1902 by Sir Henry Pilkington and later rebuilt in the 20th century. It features red brick construction with Portland stone dressings and includes cast-iron lamps. The structure has a retaining wall on the south side of Drill Square, topped with a coped parapet and piers that have segmental-gabled caps. There are eleven Art Nouveau-style lamp stands for square lamps and five sets of steps leading down to Drill Square, each with coped parapets and round-arched openings, along with cast-iron railings that have fluted segmental head standards. The railings continue over the bridge along both sides of Upper East Road. At the eastern end, the bridge is adorned with a moulded cornice and simple brick balusters for the balustrade above, a round archway with radiating stone alternate voussoirs, and diagonally-set flanking buttresses. This bridge is part of a complete early 20th-century barracks complex that includes the Captain's House, Mess Block, barracks, and other ancillary buildings.
