Description
The former Captain's House, now offices, was built in 1903 by Sir Henry Pilkington as part of the HMS Pembroke barracks complex. The building is constructed of red brick with Portland stone dressings, topped with a slate roof and featuring three ridge stacks with sunken panels. It is designed in a Free Edwardian Baroque style.
The house has a double-depth, L-shaped plan, extending over three storeys, an attic, and a basement. The right-hand gable has impost bands to each floor and a cill band to the attic, culminating in a coped gable with a segmental pediment. A prominent ashlar loggia with Ionic pilasters, a dentil cornice, open round arches, and a panelled inner door is located at the corner. Single-light windows with 4/4-pane sashes are found on the ground and first floors. The attic features a three-light mullion window, and the first-floor window has two cruciform panels displaying the dates 1903 and ER.
The main elevation to the left and the rear of the building incorporate full-height casements, and a wide basement with three-light canted bays with cross windows to the ground floor, extending to a parapet. The upper floors feature paired 6/6-pane sashes and large gabled eaves dormers with three-light mullion windows and cornices. The right-hand bay has a plain basement doorway and paired windows above, with two narrow first-floor windows. The rear elevation has a pedimented gable and a basement doorway. A re-entrant angle features a parapeted stair tower with 4/4-pane sashes on each side.
The interior includes a right-hand passage divided by pilasters and round arches. A dogleg staircase is present, featuring square newels and balusters. The ground floor has plain stone fire surrounds.
The building is part of a carefully planned early 20th-century barracks complex, alongside the barracks church, mess blocks, barracks, and other ancillary buildings.
