Description
The main gate, lodge, and walls to the former HMS Pembroke, built around 1902 by Sir Henry Pilkington, are notable features located on Dock Road in Gillingham. The structure is made of brick with stone dressings and has a slate roof.
The main gate features four diagonally-set piers flanking the outer wickets and a wide gateway. The single-room lodge is adjacent to the gate, and the walls extend approximately 40 meters to the right. The piers include impost bands and sunken round-arched panels topped with cornices, along with attached square piers capped with domes. The outer round-arched wickets have split keystones and a parapet above. Wrought-iron gates with wreathed panels and four former main gates with dog rails and panels are hung from the piers. A central pier was removed around 1990, and a late 20th-century steel overthrow has been added.
The lodge features clasping buttresses leading to a parapet, gabled ends, and a single wide round-arched window with mullions and glazing bars. There is a lateral stack present. The railings consist of diagonal square piers with coved coping and railings adorned with curved finials. The walls extend approximately 75 meters to the north of the main gate on Pembroke Road and about 300 meters to the south and southeast on Dock Road and Cumberland Road, featuring coved stone coping and tall buttress piers.
Historically, this site was part of a carefully planned early 20th-century naval barracks, which included the former Captain's House, Mess block, barracks, and ancillary buildings.
