Description
The swimming pool, built in the 1900s by Colonel Sir H Pilkington RE, is a disused structure located on the north side of North Road in Gillingham. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan, with a north entrance gable that includes clasping crenellated towers connected by a recessed parapeted segmental-arched bridge, which has a four-light mullion window. The gable is set back behind this feature. The plain parapeted sides of the building are supported by buttresses and have small windows.
This swimming pool is notable for being one of the earliest barracks swimming pools, and it, along with the adjoining gym, reflects efforts made at the end of the 19th century to improve the physical fitness of the navy. It is part of a complete naval barracks. The interior has not been inspected.
