Description

A pair of almshouses, later used as a craft centre, was built in 1899 by W.G. and A. Penty. The buildings are constructed of pink mottled brick in an English garden-wall bond, with orange-red brick quoins and dressings. Ashlar is used for the steps and buttress bases. The gable ends are stone-coped with brick kneelers, and there are brick end stacks serving a tiled roof.

The design is in the Arts and Crafts style. The front elevation is a single-storey, three-bay design featuring a battered angle and intermediate buttresses. A pair of doors with small-paned glazed lights is centrally positioned, flanked by four-light canted bay windows with small-paned casements. The eaves are adorned with modillions. The right return has a commemorative cartouche within an extruded chimney stack, displaying the date in low relief. Inscriptions on either side of the cartouche commemorate the late Sir Joseph Terry and state that the almshouses were erected by public subscription in his memory. The interior has not been inspected.
