Description

No. 13 Angel Street is a warehouse built around 1850, which has been converted into a shop. It features later additions and alterations, including a shop front added in the 1980s. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick laid in Flemish bond, with stone sills and ashlar rustication on the ground floor. The brick facade includes colourwashed bands and has a concealed roof. It stands four storeys tall and has two first-floor windows, with a loading bay on each floor.

On the ground floor, the left side has a rusticated plinth and broad, rusticated pilasters flanking the entrance. The traditional-style glazed shop front includes a part-glazed door and overlight with a fascia. To the right is a carriage entrance featuring a cambered arch with a keystone. The windows on the first and second floors are 8/8 sashes, while the third floor has 4/8 sashes, all set in plain reveals with sills and flat arches made of gauged brick. There are pitching doors above the carriage arch, all made of planks and varying in height, with plain reveals and flat arches of gauged brick, except for the third floor which has a timber lintel. All doors have hinged platforms, and there is a hoist mounting at the upper stage. The building has a continuous two-course eaves band and a coped parapet.

The right side of the building retains elliptically-arched openings, with three on the ground and first floors and two on the upper floors, mainly featuring 2-light casement windows. The interior of the ground floor has been gutted, and the rest of the building was not inspected. This warehouse is a good example of a mid-19th century structure and is located adjacent to the Corn Exchange, with which it is likely contemporary.
