Description

The building at 1, 1A and 3 Angel Street comprises two houses, originally built in the mid-18th century on the right and the late 18th century on the left, with later additions and alterations including shop fronts dating from around 1835 to 1899, and restorations in the 1980s. The construction is primarily brownish-red brick in Flemish bond, with the right-hand side painted. The left-hand side features a plain tile roof and a brick stack with decorative pots. The right-hand side has stone keystones. The building is three storeys high with attics, containing three windows on the left and two on the right. The windows are 1/1 horned sashes; those on the left are positioned beneath cambered brick arches, while those on the right have flat arches of gauged brick and fluted keystones with cornices.

The interior follows a single-depth plan with staircases positioned at the rear. The house on the left retains a dog-leg staircase with stick balusters from the first floor, as well as two raised and fielded panel doors. The house on the right still features a dog-leg staircase and a 19th-century chimneypiece on the first floor.

The ground floor presents a shared shop front to the left, featuring end pilasters with acroteria, a fascia, and a moulded cornice. The brick plinths are topped with glazed windows, and the entrances are canted in the centre, with part-glazed doors and overlights, all having been restored and renewed in part. The shop front on the right has fluted pilasters with turned mullions, and a renewed glazed door to the right, also restored and renewed in part. A modillion eaves cornice runs along the top of the building. An attic dormer with casement windows is situated on the right, while two roof-lights are present on the left.

The building forms a group with numbers 20 and 21, The Cross.
