Description
28 The Cross is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the mid-18th century and has undergone later additions and alterations, including a ground-floor shop front added around the 1970s and some restorations. The building is constructed of pinkish-red brick in Flemish bond, featuring stone sills and keystones, and has a concealed roof. It stands three storeys tall with two first-floor windows. The first and second floors have 6/6 sash windows, which are taller on the second floor, and are adorned with moulded sills and flat gauged brick arches. The low coped parapet adds to its character. The ground floor has a modern glass shop front with a glazed door on the left side.
Inside, the ground floor has been extensively altered, leaving no evidence of the original layout. This building is part of a significant group of listed buildings that includes the Church of St Nicholas, the premises occupied by Lloyds Bank, Costa, Bradford and Bingley Building Society, and Nos 20, 21, and 31 The Cross. Together, these structures create an important visual framework for the entrance to the city centre.
