Description

31 The Cross is a house built around 1730, with later additions and alterations, including a ground floor shop front added in the 1960s. The building is constructed of reddish-brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring stone pilasters, keystones, and sills. It has a timber cornice and a plain tile hipped roof, with a hipped front and left end, and a brick stack with a pot. The house has three storeys with an attic and three first-floor windows. There are rusticated fluted pilasters on the sides, and the first and second floors have 1/1 sash windows in near-flush frames, with flat arches made of gauged brick and fluted keystones. The center windows feature foliate decoration and have moulded sills. The eaves are adorned with modillion and ovolo cornices, and there are two attic dormers with 1/1 sashes. The ground floor has a renewed glazed shop front with a glazed entrance.

Inside, the ground floor has been renewed, but the upper floors still retain original joinery and plasterwork, including panelled shutters and moulded cornices. This building is part of a significant group of listed buildings that includes premises occupied by Lloyds Bank, Costa, and Bradford and Bingley Building Society, as well as the former Church of St Nicholas and Nos 20, 21, and 28 The Cross. Together, these buildings create an important visual frame for the entrance to the city.
