Description

70 Broad Street is likely a house and shop, now functioning as a shop with offices above. It dates from the mid-18th century, possibly with earlier origins, and has undergone later additions and alterations, including stucco work from the early 19th century and a ground floor shop front that was likely restored in the late 19th century.

The building features stucco over brick with an old plain tile roof that is hipped at the front, a pinkish brown brick stack on the left, and cast iron brackets. It stands three storeys tall with three first floor windows. The first and second floors have 6/6 sash windows where original, set in near flush frames with sills. The building is topped with a crowning modillion eaves cornice. The ground floor has a shop front with outer pilasters, a shaped fascia, and a modillion cornice, along with glazed windows featuring turned mullions and a panelled apron. There is an off-centre left entrance that is part glazed and includes a fanlight. Above the shop front cornice are four Art Nouveau style scrolled brackets.

The interior of the ground floor has been renewed and was otherwise not inspected. Historically, by the 16th century, Broad Street was second only to High Street in commercial importance, serving as a direct route through the city from the Worcester Bridge and housing several important traders and at least two inns. Some houses on Broad Street are known to have 17th century and earlier origins. The listed buildings in Broad Street form a significant group, including Nos 10, 10A, 11, the Crown Inn, 12, 18, 19, 29, 32-36, 40, 41, 43-49, 51-63, 69, 70, and the Church of All Saints. Nos 69 and 70 also form a group with Nos 31 and 32 The Cross and with Nos 61-65 on High Street.
