Description

39 Friar Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It likely dates from the 17th century, with later additions and alterations, including rebuilding of the front part in the mid to late 18th century, a shop front added around 1880, and a late 20th-century extension at the rear. The building retains some timber-framing and features pinkish-orange brick that has been whitewashed at the front, with the front part constructed in Flemish bond. The roof is slate at the front and plain tiles at the rear.

The structure has two storeys with attics and features two first-floor windows. The first floor has 2/2 sash windows set in plain reveals, complete with cambered arches and sills. There is a three-course band above the first floor and a modillion eaves band. Two attic dormers have renewed casement windows. The ground floor includes an entrance to a through passage on the right, which has a plank door. The shop front is adorned with pilasters and a fascia that includes a blind box, a plinth, plate-glass windows, and an off-centre left entrance with a glazed door.

At the rear, the original range shows exposed tie and collar beams with struts reaching to the apex. Inside, the ground floor features two cross beams, and an original bressumer beam is visible on the internal front wall. The first floor has a chamfered cross beam, while the roof reveals purlins, a collar beam, and queen struts.
