Description
39 Shambles is a house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It dates from the late 15th century, with alterations and an extension added in the late 17th century, and was remodeled in the early 19th century. The building is timber-framed and is encased at the front and rear in pink-grey brick laid in Flemish bond, topped with a pantile roof and a brick stack.
The exterior features a three-storey front with one window. The shop has a plank stable door and a projecting three-by-nine pane horizontal sliding sash window above a former external counter, all beneath an overhanging moulded canopy. The first and second floor windows are 16-pane sashes with painted stone sills and cambered brick arches. There is a fluted bowl rainwater head to the left. At the rear, there is a two-storey extension with one window, featuring a two-by-nine pane horizontal sliding sash beneath a timber lintel on the ground floor, and a 12-pane sash on the first floor.
Inside, the timber-framed cross walls are still visible. The ground floor rear room includes a fireplace with a timber lintel. The first floor front room has a fireplace with a hob-grate in a plain surround and a moulded cornice shelf, while the rear room features a hob-grate in a reeded surround with angle blocks and a plain shelf.
