Description
41 and 42 Shambles is a shop and workshop that dates back to the late 15th century and was restored around 1950. The building features a timber-framed structure, with the ground floor rebuilt in orange-red brick using English garden-wall bond, while the upper floors are rendered. The exterior presents a three-storey, three-bay front, with the first and second floors jettied on adjacent fronts. The timber-framing is exposed, showcasing dragon posts on the ground and first floors. There are two doors, both panelled and part-glazed for number 42. The windows consist of small panes, arranged in configurations of one, two, or three fixed or casement lights. On the right return, a crown post is exposed in the gable end. Inside, the complete timber-frame is preserved, including the jetty construction of the first and second floors with dragon beams. The roof retains three crown post trusses with a collar purlin.
