Description
10 and 11 Shambles is a house that has been converted into two shops and offices. It dates back to the 15th century, with later alterations, including a refronting in the early 18th century and renovations, extensions, and a new shopfront in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed and faced with orange brick in Flemish bond at the front, while the rear is in random bond. It has pantile roofs with a brick stack.
The exterior features a two-storey, two-window front. No. 10 has a board stable door with a slatted overlight to the right of a three-light small-pane shop window. No. 11 has a plank stable door with a blocked overlight and a shop window made up of four large panes. Both shops have retained their external counters and hanging bars beneath a common canopy supported by projecting joists. The first-floor windows are 16-pane sashes with cambered brick arches. The rear of the building is gabled and has 20th-century windows.
Inside, the timber frame is largely intact on both floors. The ground floor rear room of No. 10 features a brick fireplace with a cambered lintel set within a plain timber surround that includes a shelf. This house was the residence of Margaret Clitherow, who was executed as a recusant in 1586 and canonised in 1970.
