Description
No. 6 Shambles is a house dating from the late 18th century, with a 20th-century renovation and shopfront. It features grey-brown mottled brick in Flemish bond, a timber cornice, and a shopfront. The building has a hipped pantile roof with a brick stack.
The exterior is three stories high with a one-window front. The shopfront is framed by pilasters and has a plain frieze and cornice supported by bulbous brackets. To the right, there is a glazed and panelled door with a divided overlight, next to a small-pane shop window set over a brick riser. The first-floor window is a 16-pane sash, while the second floor has a squat 8-pane sash, both featuring painted sills and flat arches made of orange gauged brick. A moulded modillion eaves cornice with a fluted bowl rainwater head is located at the right end, and there is a two-course raised brick band at the second floor.
Inside, there is a close string staircase with a 'Chinese fret' balustrade and a ramped-up handrail that rises from the ground to the second floor. On the first floor, a blocked fireplace with a moulded frieze and cornice shelf remains. The second floor features a cast-iron Art Nouveau fireplace.
