Description
46 and 47 Shambles is a house that has been converted into two shops, dating from the mid-18th century, with late 19th-century shopfronts. The building is constructed of orange-buff brick in Flemish bond and features timber shopfronts and a cornice, topped with a pantile roof and a brick stack.
The exterior showcases a three-storey, four-window front. The double shopfront includes glazed and panelled doors with overlights and large-pane sash windows for No. 46, which is situated over a panelled riser and beneath a full-width moulded cornice supported by grooved consoles. The shopfront for No. 47 is returned at the right end. The first-floor windows are 15-pane sashes, while the second-floor windows are 12-pane sashes, all with painted stone sills and flat arches made of orange gauged brick. A moulded modillion cornice features an inverted bell fluted rainwater head at the left end, and there is a four-course raised brick band at the second floor. The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate that the fittings are mostly from the 19th and 20th centuries.
