Description

No. 1 Shambles is a former house that has been converted into a shop and offices. The building dates from the 14th century, 17th century, and early 18th century, with later extensions and a mid-19th century shopfront. It features painted brick in Flemish bond, a timber shopfront, and an eaves cornice, topped by a hipped pantile roof with a brick stack.

The exterior has a three-storey, two-window front facing The Shambles and a one-window front to King's Square. The Shambles front has a central door that is no longer in use, as the shop is now accessed from King's Square. Both doors are part glazed, with raised and fielded panels and decorative overlights. The shop windows on both fronts are small-pane canted bays with moulded cornices. At the right end of The Shambles front, there is a three-panel door with a divided overlight that leads to a former through passage. The first and second floor windows on both fronts are 12-pane sashes with painted flat brick arches, with one window on the second floor of the Shambles front blocked. There are raised bands on both upper floors and a moulded modillion cornice, along with a fluted inverted bell rainwater head on The Shambles front.

Inside, the ground floor front room retains a moulded dentilled cornice. Some framing and floor joists from the earlier building are visible in the rear room. On the first floor, the room to the left is lined with re-used moulded square panelling beneath a moulded cornice. It features a reeded fire surround with a plain shelf and a geometric overmantel panel, flanked by fluted and enriched Ionic pilasters. Both window surrounds are also flanked by similar pilasters.
