Description
No. 5 High Ousegate is a house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It was originally built in 1743 and later remodeled and extended in the mid-19th century, with a 20th-century shopfront added. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring a timber cornice, a pantile roof, and a brick stack.
The exterior is four stories high with a five-window front. The shopfront includes a passage entrance with a plain pilaster and a moulded cornice doorcase at the left end. The windows on the first and second floors are 12-pane sashes with sills and flat arches made of contrasting gauged brick, while the third-floor windows are three-light Yorkshire sliding sashes. There are raised brick string courses on the second and third floors. A moulded frieze is located beneath a massive cornice supported by block brackets, which returns at each end. A dated rainwater head, initialled FI, is positioned to the right of the central bay.
Inside, the first-floor features a 19th-century staircase that rises from the first to the third floor. This staircase has an open string, shaped tread ends, turned balusters, and a serpentine handrail that is wreathed at the foot on a turned newel. The front right room contains a fireplace with a surround decorated with ribbon and flower mouldings, a frieze featuring a floral centre panel between foliate arabesques, and an enriched cornice shelf. The overmantel panel has an eared surround and a scroll-neck pediment enclosing a blank cartouche. The upper part of the walls is fitted with moulded sunk panelling above a moulded dado rail, topped with an enriched modillion cornice.
