Description
9 and 10 High Ousegate is a shop building dated 1933, originally built for Burton, Tailors. It features buff-pink brick in English garden-wall bond and artificial Portland stone, with a shopfront faced in marbled veneer. The roof is obscured by a parapet with moulded coping.
The exterior presents a three-storey, five-bay front. The shopfront includes passage entrances at each end, beneath a broad fascia with a moulded surround. Plate glass windows flank renewed central doors, with original panelled doors to the left, all beneath a continuous transom light that contains inset hexagonal timber panels. The upper floors are highlighted by giant order Ionic pilasters with an entablature. The three central bays have 12-pane sash windows on the first and second floors, with the first-floor windows set in moulded surrounds. The outer bays feature narrow 4-pane sashes, with the second-floor windows having moulded sills. The outer windows on the first floor and all second-floor windows have flat arches made of rubbed brick. The second-floor windows are adorned with wrought-iron balustrades featuring slender railings and Greek key bands. The passage entries and doorways showcase plaster ceilings moulded with flutes and roundels.
Set within the shopfront are three foundation stones dated 1933, which bear the names of members of the Burton family. The interior has not been inspected.
