Description
13 and 14 High Ousegate are a pair of houses that have been converted into shops and offices. They date from the early 18th century and feature 20th-century shopfronts. No. 13 is constructed of painted brick, while No. 14 is finished with colour-washed stucco, accented by rusticated quoin strips and painted stone dressings. Both buildings have a timber moulded cornice beneath a pantile roof.
The exterior presents a three-storey, five-bay front, with the center bay projecting forward between giant Composite pilasters. The central doorway is rusticated and set within a keyed round-arched hollow-chamfered doorcase, topped by a moulded cornice. The shopfronts on either side are framed by sunk-panel pilasters, featuring a deep frieze and moulded cornice supported by grooved consoles with rounded caps.
On the first floor, the central window is an unequal 15-pane sash, which is highlighted by a moulded keyblock that interrupts a raised band on the second floor, topped with a floating segmental pediment. The remaining windows include unequal 15-pane sashes for No. 13 and 12-pane sashes for No. 14, with the second-floor windows of No. 14 possibly being original. All windows have painted sills. The building is finished with a plain frieze and a projecting moulded eaves cornice on block brackets, featuring inverted bell rainwater heads at each end, with the left one embossed with "TD 1763."
The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate that original staircases with turned balusters exist, although the staircase in No. 13 is incomplete.
