Description
11 and 12 High Ousegate is a pair of houses that have been converted into shops and offices. They were built around 1705 and feature 20th-century shopfronts that still show some elements from the 19th century. The buildings were refurbished in 1992 and were originally commissioned by Samuel Buxton, a grocer who served as Sheriff from 1696 to 1697.
The exterior is finished in stucco and includes a large timber cornice supported by shaped brackets. The slate roof has brick stacks. The buildings rise three storeys with an attic and have a nine-bay front. The upper floors are divided into sections of four, one, and four bays by giant fluted Ionic pilasters that support a plain frieze and cornice, which projects forward over the pilasters.
The shopfronts feature Composite pilasters with Art Nouveau carvings and cornices between heavy console brackets that may bear the initials of former shops. On the upper floors, the central windows are framed with moulded architraves; the first-floor window has scrolls and a pedimented cornice hood, while the second-floor window has a raised moulded sill. The first-floor windows are tall 18-pane sashes, and the second-floor windows are 12-pane sashes with painted sills. The attic has flat-topped dormers with 4-pane sashes. A raised band is present at the second floor, and there are inverted bell rainwater heads dated 1758 at each end of the cornice, both initialled IEM, likely for John Mayer.
Inside, the first floor retains a moulded plaster ceiling cornice.
