Description
No. 21 High Ousegate is a house dating from the early 18th century, with 19th-century and later alterations, and a 20th-century shopfront. The front is rendered and features timber boxed guttering above a moulded cornice, while the roof is slate with a brick stack at the right end.
The building has three storeys and a two-window front. The shopfront continues from No. 20. On the first floor, there are one-pane sash windows, and on the second floor, there are 12-pane sash windows, both with rendered sills. A raised band marks the second floor.
Inside, the first floor includes two doorcases with pilastered surrounds at the stair head. The front room features a fluted cornice and a late 19th-century fireplace between alcove cupboards, while the back room has a fireplace with a hob grate in a fluted surround. A close string staircase leads to the attic, with turned balusters, square newels with attached half-balusters, and a flat moulded handrail. The balusters on the attic flight are older and reused.
On the second floor, the front room has a fireplace with angle roundels, the inner front room has a fireplace with a dentilled cornice shelf, and the back room features a fireplace with a moulded surround. In the attic, there is one surviving three-panel door.
