Description
This building comprises two shops located on the north side of Newark-on-Trent’s Market Place. Constructed in 1935 and designed by Burtons the Tailors’ house architects, it is built of brick with stone dressings, a marble plinth, and has a roof that is not visible. The architectural style is Modified Classical Revival. A fascia cornice and stepped coped parapet are prominent features. The building is three storeys high, with a three-window frontage. The first and second floors are treated as a single unit, incorporating a central recess with paired giant Ionic pilasters. A steel cross casement sits centrally on the first floor, above which is a similar French window with a wrought iron balcony. Single narrow casements are positioned on either side of the central recess on both the first and second floors. The ground floor shopfront incorporates bronze glazing bars, a recessed glazed double door flanked by single-pane windows with patterned toplights. The right return of the building features a recess with six pilasters and three casements, with a French window and balcony above each. Single narrow flanking lights are present on each floor of the return. The ground floor features three single-pane shop windows, although the right-hand window has been bricked up and a doorway inserted in the late 20th century. The building is included on the listing for its group value.
